Atlanta, GA #120 Leathercraft Classes

Basic Leathercraft, Sept. 23rd, 10 am–2 pm. This is a basic introduction to the various types of leathers – veg-tans and chrome-tans. Then using this knowledge, you will create a small card case using some basic sewing tools – groover, stitching chisel, needle, and thread. Class fee: $15.00

 

Mask Making, Sept. 30th, 10 am-1 pm. Using light weight veg-tan and a Styrofoam head, we will be making a mask, just in time for Halloween! We’ll also be coloring the masks using either dyes or paints, so bring your “wicked” and “wacky” ideas. Class fee: $15.00

 

Lamp Shade Class, September 20th & 27th. This is a two-Wednesday class. Learn how to make a 11” tall lamp shade that fits on a harp or hanging from a chain. In the first class, we’ll complete cut out all of the panels of the lamp, layout the holes, and start punching the holes. You will need to bring two round punches (3/32” & 5/32”) and a small roll of contact paper (Dollar store is great!). Homework will be your design completed as well as any dyeing/sealing and beveling/slicking of all the edges. In the second class, we’ll assemble the shade so you’ll need lacing needles. We will provide all the leather and lace. Class fee: $50.00

Coloring with Dyes – The Basics, Oct. 4th. Want to learn how to dye your leather projects? This class will show you how to use our Eco-Flo line of products. We will be using finishes as a resist, introduce you to block dying, and using the Hi-Lite dyes, gel antiques, and acrylic & wax sealers. All materials will be provided. You will be receiving a copy of Coloring Leather Book (#61942-00). Class fee: $10

 

Double Loop Lacing, Oct. 11th. In this class, we are going to teach you how to do the most popular lacing – the double loop lace. Then you’ll have no excuses to shy away from making anything you want because “you don’t know how to do that”! Please bring a wing divider, if you have one. Class fee: $15

 

Braided Leather Bracelet, Oct. 18th. This is a very easy way to make a classy, braided leather bracelet. We’ll provide the leather, lace, and button stud. Be prepared to have some fun and be amazed at how simple this bracelet is to make. Class fee: $20

 

Dog Collar & Leash, Oct. 25th. Learn how to make a dog collar and leash starting with a cowhide strip. You will learn how to lay out your strap and attach hardware. Materials will be provided. Please measure your dog’s neck! Class fee: $25

 

Terraflex Ornament, Nov. 1st. This class will introduce you to the basic of working with Terraflex. The heat-sensitive materials can be molded to make lots of light-weight items. You will learn to make an ornament with hooks to hang it when done – one each on the outside and one on the inside to hang a concho. Bring your own concho or pick up one when you get here! Class fee: $20

You will cut one out (with or without antlers), mold it to stand up by itself, and then apply a dye. You’ll then attach a loop to hang it with (or not). Then you can make another one. Class fee: $25

 

Oct. 7th – No class

 

Journal Making, Oct. 14th, 9:30 am-3:30 pm. A guest instructor will teach you how to make a journal – with or w/o a strap – and signatures. You will learn what is involved in cutting the leather to the correct specifications, how to make signature holes, and how to hand sew the journal. Stamping techniques and options on customization will be discussed. Class fee: $35 (Min. 6)

 

Terraflex Knife, Oct. 21st, 10 am-1 pm. This class will introduce you to the basic of working with Terraflex.  The heat-sensitive materials can be molded to make lots of light-weight items. You will learn how to make a decorative/prop knife. Class fee: $30

 

Intro to Leather, Oct. 28th, 9:30 am-3:30 pm. A guest instructor will teach how to use the tools of leather bag making and the basic stitching technique. All leather and supplies will be provided. Sleigh Bell Door Hanger, Nov. 18th, 10 am-1 pm. Make a beautiful door hanger for the holidays using pyramid spots, bells, and a decorative Dee. If you would like to add a concho, bring one with you or buy one when you get here. Class fee: $25

You will be cutting leather with scissors and then molding the pieces to form a beautiful poinsettia! Once the pieces are cut and molded, you will dye them and we will let them dry before assembling. You will take home a pattern and a beautiful flower. Class fee: $25

Basics of Stitching

There are many ways to stitch your leather: for function, for decoration, or both! Come join employee Braden for instruction on the basic techniques in stitching with thread.  In this class you’ll learn all about the different needles, threads, and when to use which technique on a project.  All materials and tools will be provided, and keep in mind that stitching with leather can be tough on the hands so be prepared for a little struggle!  Ages 14+ and beginners are welcome. Class time is flexible, depending on the speed of the attendees.

Wallet Making

Getting ramped up for the holidays means figuring out the perfect gift to give a loved one. One of the most basic, well received projects a handcrafter can make to give is a wallet, and in this class you’ll learn how to make a sleek and minimalist type of wallet that’s still well suited to be stuffed full of cards! Choose two types of patterns: an open-side wallet with a liner or a closed edge wallet with a cash pocket. You’ll be shown how to trace your pattern onto leather, cut it out, punch your stitching holes, as well as a few tips on how to design the inside pockets of your wallet to lay slim. Ages 14+, it’s recommended you have taken the basics of stitching or have at least a rudimentary knowledge on stitching, and also recommended you know how to have a great time!

It’s the Halloween season, so in the spirit we will be making kids masks. We will be cutting, stamping and molding the mask to a custom fit in store. Any dying, painting, or finishing will need to be done later on as the wet forming process will take the majority of 24 hours.

Hand Sewing

In this free class we learn the different ways to prepare leather for hand sewing, including stitching spacers, awls, and diamond chisels. Various needle types will be explained, along with an overview of available threads. A notebook and pen are recommended!

Basic Carving and Tooling

Learn the basics of Sheridan style, which can be applied to any other type of tooling and carving. Supplies to bring (classroom supplies are available if you don’t have your own yet): Basic tooling stamps (we recommend the Basic Stamping Set), mallet (Poly or Rawhide, not rubber or metal please!), swivel knife, and “The Leather Craft Handbook.” Call to reserve your seat in this free session, space is limited!

The Basics of Hardware – Selection & Setting

If you’re new to leatherworking or maybe you’ve only ever hand stitched your leather, come take this class and we’ll teach you all about how to properly size a rivet, (yes, that’s important), as well as how to set them.  We’ll also go through how to set other various hardware such as Eyelets/Grommets, Rivets & Burrs, Line, Segma and Glove Snaps, Decorative Spots and Screw Posts/Chicago Screws.  Each of these hardware settings have their own tool and technique for proper application.  With our many years of experience we will impart our personal tips and tricks to help you set each one properly…..Like how to get that Line 24 Snap to set straight….we understand and we can help!

The Basics of Stitching & Lacing

In this class we’ll go over the most important thread stitch for hand sewing leather…The Saddle Stitch!  It’s a remarkably simple stitch to perfect but there are a few variations of it and some tools that make stitching leather much easier.  We’ll also go over the basic Single Loop Laced Stitch, which is the perfect starter stitch for decorative lacing around the edge of your project.  Have you been using single or double prong lacing needles?  Have you ever tried the Perma-Lok needle?  Do you have Stitching Chisels for thread or lace?  Come and let us show you the advantages of these tools and we’ll help you decide what will work best for you.

Gun Holster   Part 2 of 2

Cost: must have attended part 1

Materials: Mallet or Maul, Diamond Punches/Awl, Utility Knife, Edge Beveller and slicker. YOU MUST PROVIDE YOUR OWN TOOLS

Description: In this class we will go over the basics of making a concealed carry leather gun holster including: laying out a patter, cutting the leather, choosing the angle of the holster, wet molding, and putting the holster together by either stitching or lacing. BRING YOUR PISTOL, BUT IT MUST BE UNLOADED WITH SLIDE BACK/MAG OUT AND CHECKED AT THE FRONT COUNTER.

In this class you will be making a custom sheath to fit your knife.  You will need to bring your knife, but limit blade length to no more than 6”.  You will learn how to make a pattern specifically to fit your knife, cutting the piece from veg tan leather,  tooling or stamping as desired, dyeing & finishing and stitching.  Tools you will need to bring or purchase: tooling or stamping tools and tools to punch stitching holes.

We will be teaching you how to use our new Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine.  You will be making a basic business card holder using the sewing machine.  All materials will be provided.

October 28 & November 4, 2017  Holiday Pictorial Tooling project  10:00am-1:00pm

This will be an advanced class.  You will be tooling & dyeing a Fall holiday picture on a 8 ½” x 11” piece of veg-tan leather.  (see sample in store)  This is a 2 part class to allow ample time to complete your project.  This picture is suitable for framing.  Tools you will need:  Swivel knife and basic tooling set.

You will be creating a credit card wallet from veg-tan leather, sewing on machine or hand stitching, dyeing and finishing.                Class fee:  $20.00

 

November 18, 2017  Leather bracelet making  10:00am-1:00pm

We will be teaching various techniques on bracelet making and you will create a 2 color braided leather wrap bracelet for yourself or to use as a gift.  We provide the clasp, 2 colors of lacing (our choice or you can purchase your own colors) and a 20” strand of large seed beads.  We will have 2 or 3 choices on the colors of beads, if you want specific colors, you will need to bring them with you.

Description: In this class, you learn to prepare leather for carving, transfer a pattern to the leather, and how leather stamping tools work to help define your design. You will be carving a simple flower that incorporates all the basics you need to know in carving on leather. You’ll also gain a general knowledge of the leather and tools we carry to help you with your future projects.

Ranger Belt – Free- 10am- 1pm

Creating a belt that resembles the style of the old west gun belts. this will be 1.5" wide to fit most pants belt loops. This will use a 3-piece buckle set, and it will require some stitching of parts. Staining and finishing and installing the 3-piece buckle set.
you will learn how to figure out the size of the belt, cut and finish all parts, and assembly. please bring your own tools if you have them, if not we do have loaner tools.

In this class, you will be cutting and sewing a large travel bag or overnight bag. We will be making the pattern from a new book we offer and will be using our new Heavy-Duty Singer Sewing Machine to save time and have you practice your machine sewing skills.

The leather armour course will be a series of classes, each covering a piece of leather armour. Students may sign up to take the whole series or a single class. If you choose to participate in the whole series, upon completion, you will receive an in-store special bonus. Basic Stamping and Tooling: 1st & 3rd Saturdays of every month, 9:30am – 11am.

Everybody has to start somewhere, and this class will teach you the valuable basics of leather stamping and carving. You’ll learn about casing leather, the proper use of stamping tools and the swivel knife, plus a few other handy tips and tricks!

Come and learn the basics of carving any design into leather.  You will learn to case leather to allow it to receive carving and stamping as well as how to maintain the swivel knife.  You will learn how to use the “basic 7” tools (camouflage, pear shader, beveller, veiner, seeder, mules foot and backgrounder.)  We will carve a western floral design, but with the skills you will learn from this exercise you will be able to carve anything!!  We will have the basic Leatherworking Kit available for purchase for $32.00.  This kit includes all the tools that you will need for class.

It’s that time of the year again, time to build the leather top hat, you have seen it in the display case, you have been tempted by the rise of steampunk, and you have seen them in all the classic films. Now it’s time to make your own! In this 2 part class, we will be going over how to build a top hat from leather. This first week of the class, we will be laying out the pattern, cutting, and punching holes. Then, you can get started on carving and decorating your hat to your liking. Next Saturday, you will need to have your hat ready to construct!

Classes are held on Saturday mornings from 10 am to 12 noon and repeated Saturday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm .We hold classes every month except August and December. There are four classes in the course, described below. Class size is limited to 8 people on a first come, first served basis. Classes must be booked in advanced.

 

Class I.  Leather knowledge and stamping.

Various types of leather are shown and discussed. Students will learn tanning methods, grades/quality and typical usage.

Students learn how to prepare leather for stamping and use stamptools to put designs into leather.

 

Class 2. Leather carving.

An overview of how to carve designs into leather. Students will be instructed on the correct use of the swivel knife, basic 6 stamptools and related items to achieve successful leather carving.

                     

Class 3. Colouring leather.

Various types of colouring agents for leather will be show and discussed. Particular attention paid to dyes, stains and finishes. Students will learn application techniques and expected results.

 

Class 4. Methods of construction.

Students will learn different methods of joining leather together. Emphasis on lacing, stitching plus associated tools to complete leather projects.

Basic Leather Craft Class

There will be 3 classes to complete basic leather crafting course.

Class 1: You will learn stamping of a leather coaster with basket weave stamp. Class will emphasize on basic leather knowledge that includes leather preparation and a proper and safe use of leather stamps to create designs. In second half of class, we will transfer a design on piece of leather for another project (if time permits).

Class 2: You will experience a bit more in carving leather techniques that starts with safe handling of swivel knife and with the help of various tools, you will be able to tool the project. You will complete the tooling part of our project in the same day.

Class 3: In this week, you have done stamping & tooling each project and now, will learn how to dye your project and will get to know more techniques to seal and finish your leather to a presentable state.
Again, if time permits and upon willingness to all students, you will be taught to various use of binding styles & few patterns of lacing.
